What Is Organ Donation?

It is an undeniable truth that there is an increasing number of patients' name on the organ transplant waiting list. According to an article published in The Star dated March 16, 2016, there are 19,985 patients on Malaysia's organ waiting list. This figure is alarming as the number is expected to incline due to more Malaysians living unhealthy lifestyles, thus causing them to be susceptible to non-communicable diseases (NCD). NCD can also be defined as non-transmissible diseases. The four main categories of NCD are cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes.

Organ transplant is a process of donating tissue or organs from a dead or living person which involves medical procedures to living recipients. In many cases, those living recipients are very ill or dying leading to organ dysfunction which require replacement of that particular damaged organ. By looking into this, it is proven that donation can improve life quality or save lives.
